Formed in 2013 at the Royal Northern College of Music, A4 Brass Quartet has established itself at the forefront of British brass chamber music. Comprising principal players from some of the UK's top brass bands — including Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick and Foden's — the quartet brings together cornet, tenor horn, baritone and euphonium to create a distinctive sound that sets them apart from the standard brass quartet formation.
Praised for their "technical virtuosity in abundance" by Brass Band World, the ensemble performs both lyrical and high-octane works, and has actively developed their repertoire through commissioning, composing and arranging music. In October 2018 they became the first brass ensemble ever to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award, and in 2020 were the first ensemble to be awarded Associate Members of the RNCM. Further accolades include the Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music Competition, the Tunnell Trust Award, the Musicians' Company Maisie Lewis Prize and the Tillett Trust Young Artists' Platform.
The quartet has performed at Wigmore Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Bridgewater Hall, and Cadogan Hall, among many other UK venues, and has undertaken international engagements in Finland, Switzerland and Lithuania. They have also appeared three times on BBC Radio 3's In Tune and on ITV's Christmas Carol Concerts.
